Neighborhood Trust and DCA Integrate Free Tax Preparation Services into the Workplace

Neighborhood Trust partnered with the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) in support of its initiative providing free tax preparation in New York City through the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The employer-based VITA program, or NYC Free Tax Prep at Work, is the first program in the country to allow employees at partner organizations who earned $54,000 or less to file for free at work—at no cost to the employer—by using a convenient, drop-off service that takes just 20 minutes. The program started in February and will continue throughout the tax season.

DCA worked with the Mayor’s Office of Workforce Development and Neighborhood Trust to identify partner employers, including Aurify Brands.

Neighborhood Trust’s Cash Flow App Improves Workers’ Fin. Health

NEW YORK (3/23/16)–Small paychecks or irregular pay schedules can wreak havoc on workers’ budgets. An innovative app from Neighborhood Trust Financial Partners helps consumers maintain a balanced cash flow and avoid check cashers or short-term, high-interest loans.

The PayGoal app is being piloted by the nonprofit Neighborhood Trust Financial Partners, which is associated with Neighborhood Trust FCU, a community development credit union in New York.


Users of the PayGoal app are encouraged to balance their monthly cash flow by tracking income and upcoming expenses.

With average monthly earnings of between $1,500 to $3,000 per month, PayGoal users are encouraged to use the virtual financial planner to take a proactive approach to their income and expenses.

Thanks to the generous support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Neighborhood Trust is contributing to creating a more inclusive economy for all. The Stanford Social Innovation Review published an editorial by Kellogg Foundation President La June Montgomery urging policymakers to support the financial strength and security of families of color today, citing our work as an example of programs designed to accomplish just that.
